about

THIS TRACK HAS BEEN MADE AVAILABLE TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE AUSTRALIAN RURAL FIRE SERVICE. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED.

I wrote "Notre Dame" specifically for a pledger during a crowdfunding campaign for my latest album Fever Dreams.

One of my crowdfunding rewards was that I would write a song specifically for the pledger. A very sweet French baker, a woman, who was now living in Australia, took the pledge and asked me to write about whatever I saw fit.

I discovered that she was feeling a little homesick and was missing family and friends during the period of the Notre Dame fire - her family had close ties to the building and in fact after a large donation by her grandfather, one of the bells had been named after her grandmother. (I was given this information long after writing the song) So the piece of music I wrote became part of the family history , which was a wonderful thing for me to be a part of.

She resides on the South Coast of NSW and during the Australian fire disaster of 2019-2020 she courageously stayed for a while to prepare food for volunteers - but as I write this today she has now been evacuated. It seems a strange flip in this story that now fire has affected her personally again in such a major way in a country so far away from her homeland.

So...I've contacted her and asked if she would mind if I could make this very personal song available so as to raise money for the RFS, so here we are.

As I'm in an area of Australia that is so far far unaffected by these fires it's hard to know what to do to help. So I'm hoping I can help with this song. I've set the price at $5AU - feel free to give more - all proceeds will go to the RFS.

lyrics

Notre Dame (For Séverine)

There on the night
We lost Notre Dame
The silence of bells
The howl of alarms
And we song songs
Recited our hymns
Heads bowed below stars
Recanted our sins
Words in the clouds
Of billowing smoke
High up above
Parisian folk
The ash and the dust
Brought by the wind
Across the dark sea
To Séverine

She wipes the flour
from her hands
The oven's turned low
Sugar like sand
And unleavened dough
Dreams filled with fire
And funeral pyres
And tumbling down
Gargoyles and spires

And sweet Séverine
toasted with gin
A glass to the sky
A never ending goodbye

And in Jervis Bay
A
Single
Sun
Ray
Broke through the clouds

"If Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy were pushed out to sea in a rickety old boat they’d come up with something like this. ..a boisterous yet soulful musical journey worth the fare. You’ll be stomping and crying and laughing, and if you’re lucky to catch Moldre live, you’ll be doing all three with a whiskey in hand.” Timber & Steel ... more
